January - #teacherfaves

Basically, I'm the opposite of an early adopter (which would probably be called a late adopter?) for Instagram. I honestly don't know why I didn't sign up sooner than a year and a half ago. Actually...it's probably because of all the children I have had. It took me awhile to discover all the amazing teacher Instagram accounts but when I did I was hooked!

Being on mat leave and seeing posts of beautiful classrooms, awesome student work, and new TpT products I want to try out can actually make it difficult to "live in the moment." But then I remember how much I love my job and I rationalize being unable to fully turn my teaching brain off that way. I also try to set limits for how much time I spend scrolling through my phone and try (and sometimes fail to be perfectly honest) to not be on it when I'm with my own kids. I have saved some really neat ideas and to help myself remember to actually try them out in September I'm going to share some of my #teacherfaves for Music, Math and More!

MUSIC
Snowball Fight Compositions - mrs.perezsays

How fun is this? Using crumpled up pieces of paper and some buckets she had her first graders create rhythm compositions by having the number of snowballs that landed in each heart beat bucket determine the rhythm they would use (titi, ta, rest, and tikatika) for each beat.

MATH
Glow-in-the-Dark Math Party - inspiringthenextgen

Why, yes! I do need a black light. Inspiringthenextgen used black lights, highlighters, glow-in-the-dark tape, white t-shirts and glow necklaces to make Math content review super engaging for their students. They used 5-8 blacklights, covered the windows with black paper and posted review problems around the room. Students were decked out in glow necklaces, wore white t-shirts and used highlighters to solve the problems.

MORE
Think Outside the Box Thursday - selebrateyou

My Grade 6s loooved our morning meetings and I definitely want to add something even more interactive like this to our routine. The students would grab a piece of paper with the design photocopied on it and get to work as soon as they came in. When they were finished they would bring their creation to the carpet and share what they did with a partner. What a great way for the class to see how each student comes to school with their own perspectives.
